Abstract. After the collapse of the bipolar system of international relations, strategy of containment
and engagement (congagement) becomes a determinant of the U.S. foreign policy on
China; its relevance is explained by the China’s immanent build-up of defence potential, high
rates of economic growth, increase of global and regional role.
The components of the strategy «congagement» – the notion of «containment» and «engagement
» («integration») – had been investigated as established scientific categories in the theory
of international relations. In the context of a comprehensive solving of scientific problem the
levels of interstate integration had been highlighted, clear delimitation between the «containment
» (keeping an enemy in certain territorial limits) and «deterrence» (influence on an opponent
by the preventive threats), attention had been focused on the transformation stages of
«congagement» strategy by examining their categorical-conceptual apparatus.
