Abstract

Abstract. The article studies and generalizes the main trends in the functioning of modern
food markets through the angle of development of the world agricultural and food system in
general with its problems and contradictions; assesses main leverages impacting world food
market opportunities and determines strategic priorities of their further development. Considerable attention is focused on the problems of increasing international competition, as well as strengthening of the role of transnational corporations in the world agricultural and food system.
Food markets provide for the peoples most vitally important needs, which in turn determines
their central place in the market system. Population growth has cause the quadrupling of the
world demand for food during the past 50 years. However, experts of the Organization of Economic
Cooperation and Development (OECD) emphasize that world agriculture has the capacity
to cover the demand for food products even in the case of expected increase of population
by 80 million people during the next 20 years.
