RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT OF TRANSNATIONAL FIRMS: CONTEMPORARY DETERMINANTS OF INTERNATIONALIZATION

Abstract. The paper focuses on the main determinants of internationalization of research
and development by transnational corporations such as «push-in» and «pull-out» factors, economic
policy and new management opportunities factors. It shows several motives for knowledge
creation internationalization such as to adapt existing technologies to the local markets,
to support affiliates production activities, to get new knowledge which are developed by foreign
companies.
In terms of importance to the corporation, this paper highlights several categories of motives
internationalization of knowledge creation. One of the categories includes motives of the transfer
of research works abroad. Another category includes average importance motives, among
this motives of internationalization of Research & Development, can be named the need to support
innovative industrial branches that exist in the host country. Another one category includes
secondary motives of internationalization, with limited impact on the strategy of multinational
corporations.
