Abstract

Abstract. The article deals with history and reasons of appearance of nuclear weapon in
South Asia. Politics of India and Pakistan in the sphere of nuclear armament is researched. Peculiarities
of the development of weapon of mass destruction in those countries are investigated
and possible results of nuclear war in the region are analyzed.
India and Pakistan move on the way of increasing nuclear potential. Both countries conducted
underground nuclear tests in 1998. The reasons of the two countries to increase nuclear
weapon are different. India has complicated relations with Pakistan and China, desire to
strengthen the influence on Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, wish to be not only regional, but also
global leader. The reasons of Pakistan are to obtain parity with India in military sphere and to
strengthen prestige among muslim countries. In January 2014 India had 90-110 nuclear warheads and Pakistan had 100-120. Important role in making decision concerning nuclear weapon
play military man. Accumulation of nuclear weapon worry international community as there is
no guarantee that worsening of relations between two countries will not grow into nuclear conflict.
